In our training
programs there is often a debate about driver reaction time, with some
suggesting the average is less than a second. Given that there are so many
distractions on the road we do well to question just how quick our reactions
are – particularly when the vehicle in front SLAMS on their brakes.
How good are your
reactions? When trying the following test bear in mind that you are “prepped”
for this and that your finger is hovering above the keyboard. If you are less
than 1/3 of a second, try moving the hand about 30 cm’s from the keyboard and
try again.
Check out this month’s
Safety Challenge and test your average reaction time.
Now that you have seen
just how “average” your times are, remember to extrapolate this in terms of
your foot moving from the accelerator to the brake pedal – then think again.
Till next time – Focus
on the drive.
